EUROSTUDENT VIII

EUROSTUDENT VIII traditionally focuses on the socio-economic conditions of study at higher education institutions and its main target groups are students in Bachelor and Master programmes.

In addition to questions related to the main research topic, the questionnaire of the current survey focuses on health aspects of life, discrimination and possible impacts on studies (including support provided in adverse situations by the higher education institution).

The specifically Czech part of the questionnaire includes several questions focused on language skills and their development during studies. As similar questions were asked in 2019, we will have a unique opportunity for comparison.

What has happened so far?

• Data collection in higher education institutions started on 25 May and ended on 15 July 2022.
• All public and most private higher education institutions, as well as one state university, have been involved in reaching students.
• More than 250,000 students in Bachelor and Master studies were contacted.
• 27 174 respondents started the questionnaire and 16 421 of them completed it.
• 93 % of respondents completed the questionnaire in Czech, the rest in English.
• 59 % of women and 39.5 % of men completed the questionnaire and about 1.5 % of respondents did not declare any gender.
• The questionnaire was dominated by BA students (64 %), with 23 % being Ma students.
• More than 15,000 cases are available for international analysis after the first data cleaning.
• The winners of the 14 electronic vouchers were drawn at the beginning of August 2022 and sent the vouchers.
• Communication and close cooperation with the EUROSTUDENT coordination team (2 members of the Czech team attended a meeting in Vienna in November 2022 – checking the accuracy of the cleaned data, etc.).
• Data sets for participating universities
• Presentation of the Czech data in September 2023 (organized by Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport)
• Transcoding and cleaning of the data for the EUROSTUDENT VIII merged file (i.e. microdata – an international analysable file in aggregated and anonymized format at the beginning of 2024.

Questions around EUROSTUDENT (also related to other national and international surveys in the Czech Republic)

• Low response rate (In time, this is a deepening problem. How to ensure more willingness to enter the questionnaire? How to increase motivation of respondents? But also, how effectively influence the technical “circumstances” involved in sending out invitations? This year’s wave was also affected by the late start of data collection…)
• Low completion rates (Is it the problem of questionnaire length only? Why have some other countries better response rate and completion rates?)
• Coordination with institutional surveys (in this survey, the collision was treated with the universities involved, thanks to the helpfulness of the contact persons).
